Text Box: It’s hard to believe another year has come and gone at the New River-Highlands RC&D Council. We have undertaken a host of new projects as well as completing some we started last year, and some that have been running for several years. Some of the completed projects include four Total Maximum Daily Load Projects, the Stevens Amendment Act Fire Mitigation Project, the Livestock Processing Facility Feasibility Study, the Rain Garden Model/Display, a Forest Service Providers Workshop, a Forestry Satellite Workshop, we took part in a Green Infrastructure Trail Conference, and a Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program Promotional Tour. As you can determine from this list of accomplishments, there’s not a lot of down time in our council.
Our list of projects for 2008 is similar to 2007. Probably the largest hurdle we will have this year is hosting the 2008 Southeast Association RC&D Meeting. A lot of work has all ready been done for this undertaking, but we still have a long way to go. As usual, I’m sure our volunteers are up to the task and will do a great job. I’m also proud to announce that Jay Hubble was elected chair of the Virginia Association of RC&D Councils for 2008 so this will also be a big help in getting the meeting organized.
The things that continue to lead to our success are our people. We have a great group of volunteers who continue to serve unselfishly for ideals that they all believe in. Also we need to thank all our sponsors, the state agencies that help us, and private firms we work with throughout the year.
As we continue to make Southwest Virginia a better place to live, I’d like to thank each and every one of you for all your work and contributions to our council. Last, but not least, I’m quite sure we have the best staff in the state of Virginia. They continue to help us make all our ideas happen.
Other groups that lead to our success as a council are the county sponsors, state agencies, federal agencies, as well as private businesses who support us in our efforts to make Southwest Virginia one of the best places on earth to live.
I'd personally like to thank each of you for helping me through this first year as chair and I have every reason to believe that next year will only get better.
  	Thanks for your hard work,

Charles P. Shorter
